In his latest attempt to revert the (as of now unofficial) election results, AMLO has called his sympathisers to camp out on Paseo de la Reforma (Mexico City’s own “Champs Elysees” and some other streets as well as the central square (Zocalo). The results are catastrophic – traffic chaos pervails in Mexico City since the heavily trafficated Reforma isn’t useable, and people used to use this main avenue are forced to seek other ways to move themselves.
It’s kind of ironic, though, that he is causing this trouble in the city where he received the highest percentage of votes. Interviews in media talk about “ordinary people” – people that voted for him – being really frustrated and getting into trouble for not being able to move about the city as before. 30 minute rides are taking 2 or more hours. Businesses along the blocked areas are losing tens millions of pesos every day. And I don’t mean big businesses like hotels and such (that are losing way more), but small businesses, led by people that in many cases voted for this guy.
Back in 2000, when he was mayor of the city, he passed a law that prohibits blocking of avenues and streets that implicate severe effects on traffic situation and pollution. He is breaking the law he himself passed!!! However, that doesn’t seem to bother him, as he has all the support he needs from the city government (also PRD). Alejandro Encinas – the actual mayor, says that everybody is in their right to protest. Against the laws. Jeeeez.
Even AMLO’s most ardent followers, including the writer Carlos Monsivais, are calling for an end of these road blocks, since they affect in a severe way the people that voted for AMLO.
But does AMLO listen? Nooooo… he blames Calderón for the blocks! Man is this guy psychotic or what.
