A few days ago, in the state of Veracruz, left wing politician Celestino Rivera Hernandez was caught in the act of sodomizing and raping a 12 year old boy that he had picked up on the street. Celestino is a “respected” pillar of his community, but he had done this before. No less than 5 [...]

Weatherproofing my router/AP

Posted By Per-Otto Lekare on September 28th, 2006

I am a happy owner of a Linksys WRT54G router. Happy? Yes. This unit has worked flawlessly throughout the years, it’s approximately 2 or 3 years now. I have upgraded the firmware, not using Linksys’ own firmware but rather one called Satori. This firmware lets me tweak several features of the router, for instance output power, QoS features, etc.

Since moving into the new house, I keep the router in my office (the house is built on a slope, so the office and all the bedrooms are below the main living areas). I have, however, noticed that I don’t get any access when I’m in the living room, kitchen etc. Only on the big terrace. This calls for one of three solutions:

  1. I move the router upstairs (and do the ethernet cabling needed)
  2. I move the router to a high place, preferably outside but close to my office so that the signal reaches all the corners of the house.
  3. I buy a range extender / access point and install it upstairs. This calls (again) for network cabling, which I’m not particularly fond of.

So I chose option 2. This makes me need to weatherproof the WRT54G. The router itself would be shielded from direct rain and direct sun, since it would be placed under a roof, but still outside. I have looked at several (bought) options with die cast housings, etc. It seems a bit overkill for my taste. So I will try to do it my own way. Bought a fusebox (outside casing for 60A fuses) and will try do do an installation where I can use the existing antennaes on the WRT54G and not need to buy an external antenna. I will keep you posted on my findings and my (probable) mistakes.

FTA and pirate satellite

Posted By Per-Otto Lekare on September 20th, 2006

I recently bought a Viewsat receiver and set up a 1.8 m dish antenna. I’m just a beginner regarding FTA (Free to Air – free channels transmitted through satellite), but found Viewsat easy enough to use and set up. Then I saw that the Viewsat can be used to pull down Dish Network feeds, and that there are quite a few websites that cater to these needs, they give users a .bin file with which they can upgrade their receivers and that decodes the Nagra signal. According to what I’ve read, not all receivers have enough power to decode in realtime the encrypted signal and in software “emulate” the existence of a card. Only Viewsat, and maybe Dreambox (although I haven’t seen any .bin’s for that one yet)

Now, I suffer a moral dilemma here. Should I download the .bin, upgrade my Viewsat and watch Dish Network, even though I don’t pay for it? Many may think that yes, other may think that no. Dish Network doesn’t exist here in Mexico. Even though I would be willing to pay for it, I can’t since they don’t accept non-US addresses or credit cards. The pirate satellite business is pretty big in the US and Canada (and Mexico as well, as far as I can see)…

Online again – after an eternity

Posted By Per-Otto Lekare on September 18th, 2006

I have just moved to a new place, and after a complete odyssey, I have internet access again. First of all – never hire Ignacio Romero (full name: Jesus Ignacio Romerio Solorio) for anything. He is a lawyer (or at least he says he is), a real estate agent, and a contractor. I got in touch with him when he showed me the house I rented. It was really run down and basically abandoned. He told me “I’ll fix it up in no time”. So, the contract was signed, he was paid two rents in advance, and he bolted – leaving me with workers that needed pay, material that had to be bought, etc. Completely unreliable figure.

Anyway, the house is looking good now… beautiful, actually. Internet got connected today, a week after promised time. And – unfortunately – seems alot slower than the connection I had at the other house. There I got around 1280 kbps, here I seem to get around 835 kbps… that sucks… anyway, it’s better than no Internet at all.

Calderón finally declared president

Posted By Per-Otto Lekare on September 5th, 2006

Today, the superior election tribunal declared the elections valid, and Felipe Calderón winner. It was about time. Major crybaby AMLO said he wouldn’t accept the results and that he wants to constitute a “legitimate” government, beginning Sept. 16. Of course, that government will have him as head. Of course. Jeeeeez…. he is dangerous to himself, I think.

Anyway, it’s time to move on and look ahead. AMLO lost, which in hindsight is good – especially after seeing in what way he cares for a majority of Mexicans - e.g. nothing. He has no regard whatsoever for the people that suffer everyday trying to cross town. He has no regard whatsoever for the 70% of the voters that didn’t vote for him. He is just full of himself. Thank God he lost.

Threat to democracy

PRD did what they said they would do the night of the presidential address in front of the newly elected senators and congressmen: they occupied the chair and wouldn’t let it go. The results: President Vicente Fox delivered his speech in writing and left. They did it – as they say- in protest of the high security measures taken before this speech. They say constitutional rights were trampled on and that they can’t accept anything like that. Idiots.

Now, I ask myself: What about my rights as a citizen to transit freely in Mexico City? I can’t do that. According to PRD they aren’t trampling on anybody’s rights, because ANYBODY can WALK on Reforma or in the downtown area. They think that the right to transit freely is by walking. Fucking morons. Free transit is to use whatever means of transportation (legal, of course) and use that mean of transportation to move around in the world’s biggest city.

According to PRD it is “absurd” to compare the situation of the presidential speech, where security measures didn’t allow demonstrators to get close to the congress building – with the one month long occupation of Reforma and other high traffic avenues in Mexico City. I don’t think so either. What they are doing is far, far, far worse. In the case of the presidential speech, a few streets were closed down to everybody but inhabitants of those streets – for one night. In the case of these bastards, they’ve taken the city hostage for over a month now. They should be shot on place for doing whatever they please and then putting the blame on alll the others. AMLO is a sick person, he is delusional, paranoid and actually thinks he has the support of the “people”… wake up schizzo! less than a third of the population voted for you. At this height, less than 1/4 of the population support your Don Quijote-like fight. You are digging a BIIIIG grave for the PRD. I don’t even believe you are a PRD-man. You just used the party to get the power you needed, something like Fox.

In a TV program the same day, the PRD double standard monkeys were saying “it’s a sad day, we are not celebrating” – at the same time as thousands of PRD supporters were celebrating downtown. NOBODY can actually believe these terrorists. They want to make a coup d’etat using the poor as a shield for they hunger for power.

This needs to end. Time to bring in the military to put some order into this country.
